okay so i have decided im going to go with amsoil in the engine and trans and then Harley oil in the primary. Does it matter what oil filter i run with the amsoil? i have never run synthetic in anything before, and should i flush the oil out of it before i ad the amsoil or just drain and refill?

I seem to remember that Mobil 1 does not recommend their gear oil in Harley transmissions. This was a couple of years ago so maybe something changed. Something about problems with "yellow metals".
Mobil 1 is great oil although do not use the 5 quart jug from chain stores like Walmart, it is not the same. It's lacking the extra cleaning agents. Look on the bottom of the jug it states made for Walmart. That's why they can sell it cheaper.

It is packaged for Walmart only but it is the same oil as 15W-50 bought at the auto store. It was pulled from Walmart last year because the auto stores were complaining that they could not compete. Mobil 1 decided over the winter to package again for Walmart. I have seen oil analysis for 15W-50 compared to their V-Twin 20W-50 and the only real difference is 15W-50 has 5ppm of moly in it. This is the same amount as the old H-D Primary Chaincase Oil.

Everybody should use what fits their situation. I just don't want to spend $600 a year on oil changes. Mobil 1 15W-50 is a good oil, is there better? Of course, there is always something better. I am just happy with my compromise.

Castrol 20w50 in tank and primary, had no problems and runs great. Red line HD in tranny and noticed HUGE diff. I'm in Louisiana and both hold up great for our HOTTT humid weather.

Welcome to the forum and enjoy your new ride! Good folks and info here. I swear by amsoil, but mobil one is good also. There are tons of info and opinions on here if you do a search. Synthetic only for me. Ride safe and thanks for your service.
