While attempting to air up my rear tire, I pushed my SG slightly forward to expose the valve stem and the kickstand folded, dropping my bike on the primary side. After standing it up and wiping up some oil that mysteriously dripped on the garage floor, I inspected the damage, saw a couple of scrapes to the primary cover and derby cover near the drain plug, but no other damage.

The next day, I find primary oil dripping under the bike. It's about 1-2 drops a day. I checked the drain plug, but couldn't find anything wrong. Could I have damaged the gasket? Are they that sensitive? I couldn't find any cracks on the primary cover itself.

 

As I recall it being mentioned on here sometime in the past, the 05 and onwards bikes had no locating pins in the primary case - the cause of the ubiquitous IPB failure probs. Could be when you've dropped the bike it's shifted the case slighly and caused the leak. Or the casse could have a slight (invisible) crack in it?

I thought it came on the first 6 speed boxes? Weren't they were knocking those out on some Dynas back in 05?

I'd say your seal has shifted/smashed and is causing the leak. That would be the least expensive fix... And once you remove the outer primary it may tell a different story. But that is your most logical startING point...

Leave you bike sit in one spot over night with cardboard under it and see exactly where the drips falls and mark the spot on the primary cover. Removed and inspect area carefully.

 

06 was first year for 6 speed.
prob a cracked derby cover?
I say degrease it and then go for a ride and throw some baby powder on it.
it'll find the leak.

Yes, some of the 06 Dynas were built in 05. I believe my 07 Dyna was built in 06.

 

Not wanting to go off half cocked and hijack the thread, but I'll put money on the fact that I went to to look at an 05 6 speed 88cu in Dyna when I was looking to buy mine. Also a guy I know from a Honda forum bought an 05 88 with a 6 speed box, I'm certain. Maybe things are different over here in the UK?

It does not take much of a bump to slightly bend the derby cover. If the bike fell on that side, and if you have any visible damage on the derby cover, take it off and check it carefully with a straight-edge. If it is only slightly out of whack, it will leak. Could be a great opportunity to get that nice chrome derby cover you've been thinking about!!!
