Riser or bars with stock cables?
 

So I was all excited to be getting some 14in Road 6 apes for my 06' street bob, and went up to the local Harley shop today, where they proceeded to tell me that my stock wiring and cables wouldn't fit the bars, and I was looking at 12-$1800 for them to install. Is this accurate? If so will just adding a riser give me the height I want but let me retain the stock cables and wiring? I would love to know how to just do this shit myself, but I'm admittedly not the most mechanically inclined guy out there. Any advice? I've currently got the stock 10in on there and I could really use an extra 2-6 inches as I am 6 ft tall I HATE having to ride leaning forward.

I'm running stock cables and wires on some Santee Bonanza II's. 15" rise. I dumped the idler cable too, just because. Only thing I really had to do is straighten out the 90 degree bend in the throttle cable.

See, that's what others have said. I know part of it is the dealership is obviously going to tell you they need to do it, but I'd feel much better getting the bars and using all stock wires/cables, if I had someone who's done bars before to help if I get over my head. I'm really liking the look of yours, just can't afford to make a $1,000 plus mistake right now :)

save yourself some money and do it on your own. its not hard but can be time consuming doing it for the first time. i think namz make an extension kit for the control wiring. you can unplug the harness and lengthen the wires. u might need longer throttle cables, but see how much slack you have in the clutch cable and brake tube...they might be long enough.

My bars were $120 and doing it yourself you will only spend that $120. If anything more would be the factory service manual. This forum though has plenty of info to help. Screw paying the dealership.

Do it yourself - if you need to extend the wires go buy some 14 - 16 gauge wire and a solder gun. Even doing that will only cost you $40.

Clutch cable requires draining the tranny fluid and pulling the side cover off. Only cost is new fluid and a gasket. If you have wrenches and sockets, it's a few hour job to do the whole thing. Pull the seat and tank to get the throttle cables unhooked. Plenty of "how-to" on this forum and youtube. Best advice was either having tank off or a towel over the tank when mounting bars, because they WILL flop down and clunk into the paint.

Santee bars are cheap $120 new. Check out custom chrome and ebay.

Swap-meets can be a good place for finding reasonbly priced handlebars.
