Exhaust question
I have a n '07 WG with a stage 1 kit. I recently bought a stock exhaust off a 2010 WG (the same as on a '07 Fat Bob also) the price was very cheap and I like the looks a lot better. My question is I have a bike with a higher flowing A/C with higher flow mufflers and a retuned ECM, will stock mufflers do screw up the tune on the ECM? If I drill out the baffles will it help?
Thanks, Matt |
Screwit up? -- IDK. Throw it OFF? -- Yes. By how much? -- Only the tuner knows.
Anytime you make a change, you "should" retune. |
Maybe better to do a baffle swap other than just drilling.
You can open it up and get allot better sound while using your tune. |
1st Not enough info. how was it re-tuned? If it only had the dealer download don't worry it will just run a little richer which in a Harley case is good. Which exhaust is on it now?
If I was you I would drill out one baffle first and ride it for at least a hundred miles, then check you spark plugs. If they are white things are too hot and you need more fuel, or less air flow. If they are a tan color then it's all good and you can ride hard all day without worries.! Then you can proceed in making it louder by taking out the 2nd baffle! Stilup has a real good idea there too! there is a product called BCT monster baffles that many members rave about! they're cheap and effective. |
You will lose some performance because the tommy gun exhaust is more restrictive with the CAT in there. I drilled out my exhaust and it sounded like crap IMHO. I found some SE slip ons and it sounded better. But if I rode my wife's 07 Super Glide, I could tell it more torque and power because it doesn't have a CAT in the pipes. Hence I now have the 2-1 pipe.
Or cut the CAT out of the exhaust. Hope this helps a little. Good Luck. |
The exhaust one the bike now has aftermarket slip ons, I had them off and couldn't find a brand name or part#. I think the bike was just retuned at the dealership, but I'm not sure as it was done before I purchased the bike. I just looked and the pipes on it now don't have any baffles, there is a nut and bolt that looks like probably held the baffle in.

Thanks, Matt That's an awesome look you're going for (snicker). The cat will have to come out of the newer pipe (your bike never had one) and you will want to get it tuned, one way or the other. You'll get a lot of opinions about tuning here. Mine came off of a 2012. I had to slightly modify the bracket that bolts to the transmission but nothing major. Just a little grinding. |
I have a question regarding cat removal. I've found alot of threads on it, but they all seem to pertain to touring models. Is the cat located directly in front of where the mufflers bolt up on a DWG? I always liked the fat bob exhaust. Mine has scrapes on the mufflers and I got a complete exhaust that was a new take off for $100.
Thanks, Matt |
You can see the CAT is located right where the two pipes come together. If you look at the outlet side, you can see it in there. The restriction is bad. I'm sure cutting it out would be the same as what some guys do on the touring bikes.

Found it. My pipes arrived this afternoon, I cut the window and chiseled it out, kind of a PITA, but glad I did it, huge restriction.
