Default RSD Black Ops...

Been following with great interest the thread re: "fork preload adjusters" and weighing the cost vs the benefits (kinda like the decision-making process I went through before installing the TT a while back). Finally decided that the RSD "Black Ops" #0414-0449 would be a great way to top off my front end. Ordered through CruiserCustomizing.com 10 days ago and rec'd yesterday ($160 + tx + ship for the pair).

Install is exactly the same as doing the OEM fork caps - jack up the front end, loosen the upper pinch bolts, remove old caps and install the new. I trimmed down my spacers a tad to allow for easier install of the RSD adjusters. Torque the pinch bolts, lower the bike back down to the floor and you're done.

The RSD preloaders allow about 1-1/8" adjustment from min to max preload, which may not look like much but can definitely be felt/seen in the front end. An allen wrench is all it takes to make the adjustments, but because there are no indicators on the caps you have to count "turns" to ensure equal adjustment on both sides. The adjust bolt is in the center of the cap, and regardless of how much preload you dial in, the bolt stays level with the top of the cap. It takes 22 full 360ş turns from min to max compression, and where you set it just depends on your preferences for cruising or cutting curves. I have mine set at 8 full turns for combined riding.

My "winter" projects are now complete - rest of the year will be devoted to regular maintenance and hitting the road. Thanks for reading, ride safe!

They look great, and only $10 more than the Speed Merchant items. I have the SM parts, but not installed yet. They are well made but not as attractive as the RSD parts.
