Default Think I'm Going to Trade Up

I've had my 2012 Nightster for about 14 months and recently started thinking I should have just bought a Dyna to begin with. I know, I know. There are quite a few folks out there that owe me a "told ya so."

I'm thinking I might have what I need some time around Thanksgiving. Somewhere around $17k is the number I will probably have to work with. I do like the Fat Bob quite a bit, but I think I've settled on the Street Bob.

Things that have bugged me about my Sportster include:
  • Even with forwards, I feel cramped. Score one for a Dyna with forwards.
  • I wish I had a sixth gear for the interstate. Score another one for a Dyna with a sixth gear.
  • My swingarm bag doesn't provide enough storage. I think saddlebags or a sissy bar would fix that.
Here's what I think I'd like to end up with eventually: (I'm going to edit this list as I decide what I want.)

2014 Street Bob or 2014 Fat Bob
  • Handlebars
    • Factory installed Drag Handlebars
    • H-D Street Slammers
  • Factory installed Forward Controls
  • Factory installed Smart Security System
  • Seats
    • Solo Seat: H-D Brawler or Le Pera Sanora Sport
    • Two-Up Seat: H-D Sidekick or Le Pera Sanora Sport + Pillion (FXDB only)
    • Two-Up Seat: H-D Sidekick, Le Pera Sanora Sport + Pillion, or Stock Fat Bob Seat (FXDF only)
  • Progressive Fork Springs and 444 Series Shocks
  • Fuel Moto Power Package
    • Fuel Moto Pro Billet Stage 1 Air Cleaner
    • Vance and Hines Big Shots Staggered Chrome
    • Dynojet PowerVision
  • H-D Smooth Air Cleaner Cover
  • Some combination of the following
    • H-D Black Distressed Leather Saddlebags or Leather Saddlebags + License Plate and Rear Signal Relocation Kits (FXDB only)
    • H-D Black Distressed Leather Saddlebags or Leather Saddlebags (FXDF only)
    • H-D Swingarm and Downtube Bags
    • BAD&G Hard Solo Bags: DL02BL+DR02BL
    • H-D One Piece Detachable Sissy Bar + Backrest Pad
    • Bowman Welding Black Sissy Bar + Backrest Pad
So yeah. I kinda knew I'd get the bug. I just didn't think it would be this quick. Next think you know, I'll be wanting a Street Glide. Hah!

You can't go wrong with any Dyna as far as I'm concerned. Your price range should get you where you want to be.

The black distressed saddle bags look more brown than black.

Yeah, that's what I've heard. I've seen some pictures, and I think I kind of like the way they look, but these would be my second choice.

Having gone from a sportster to a dyna, I can tell you that you will be happier with a dyna. Good luck with your purchase

I just did the same thing. I only had the sportster for 9 months before I traded up. Traded a sportster 1200 for a dyna super glide. I thought that I might miss the smaller bike for the in town riding but since taking delivery I haven't looked back. I'm 6'2" and needed forwards on the sportster but have mids on the dyna. I don't feel cramped at all, in fact, the bike feels more nimble and easier to control. Do what will make you happy and you won't look back.

I've had 2 sportsters, the street bob and the fat bob. All great.

I'll always like the way sportsters look.

The FXDF rides great...so if you like the Street Bob, don't test ride the FXDF. It will make things much harder for you.

I was afraid of that. I was thinking I should test ride the fat bob to make sure I'm good with the drag bars and forwards.

For what it's worth, I had a Fat Bob and needed to sell it. I now have a SB, and while I like the way it looks, it is nowhere near the same. There is a thread running about it right now.
