Default Street bob mpg

So I have a 13 Street bob, I have been trying to figure out how much mpg I can get out of this thing. It says it has a 4.7 gallon tank, but when I ride the gas gauge on the tank goes all the way to E and my digital gauge telling me how many miles I have remaining goes to 10 or 11 and I'm only at 180 miles. When I fill it though, I only put in 3.9 gallons...whats the deal? I'm at 1300 miles on the bike so far and since my 1k service my mileage has been horrible. I drive 53 miles one way to work on it, between 70 and 75 mph for about 90% of the trip. Otherwise I don't rip on it at the 2 stop lights I hit by my house, I drive it pretty conservatively. Before my 1k service I got 50mpg, now I can't break 46.

Mods are V&H shortshots and a K&N filter with the stock AC cover. It is the 96 not the 103.

If you're going to figure out gas mileage you don't use the gas gauge to do it. What is left in you tank, when the gauge reads empty, is a function of the float in the tank and it doesn't know how much fuel you have used.
If you want to know your mileage just fill you tank up to a place you can see and is repeatable and zero the trip meter. Ride the bike how you always ride and stop for gas again...100 to 150 miles is a good test of gas mileage. Simply fill your tank to the same place (level) as before and divide the number of miles by the number of gallons it took you to fill to the SAME place as before. Leave all the electronic wizardry out of the equation. Most bikes will show needing gas at about 160 miles. I just use my trip odometer to tell when I need gas and haven't run out yet.

Thanks Dyna rider.

I do reset my trip meter and fill it to the same spot....or at least try my hardest to get it there without spilling it all over the tank. Should I be able to push 200 miles out of a tank?

What I could never do was go 200 miles on that stock seat. Halfway to that my *** would be killing me. Good for you if you can do it.
200 miles to the tank is a bit optimistic, and unless you're one of those hyper milers it's just a number. You should be happy with 46 mpg. I never got close to that but I have a very active throttle hand, and as they say, results may vary.

i havent tried to push it that far with my 2010 dyna custom, any time around 125-150 miles i look for filling her up... i have big radius pipes, stage1 a/c, and run the pv5 i will get any where from 48- 51 depending on conditions weather and how hard i ride.. so your mileage will vary based on those factors, i really dont think 200 miles a tank is a reasonable, it may be possible for me its a gamble i wont take. (not worth the grief)

Thanks for the input guy.

Its my only vehicle so I really try to squeeze every bit out of her. Thats why I'm running the stock AC cover over the K&N because of rain protection. I bet if I got rid of that and put something better on my mileage would be a bit better.

Again, thanks for the thoughts.

You riding in from Temecula? If so those hills will affect it. I've never attempted to go 200 miles. It may be able to do it, but I wouldn't risk it.

No I'm riding up the 5 from La mesa. Its pretty flat, and I can run one speed without a lot of variation. Don't do a lot of lane splitting either, I guess I just get lucky with traffic.

Thanks!

46 mpg is a good number. My performance mods are in my signature and with 50-70% city riding I get around 40mpg.
