Correct bolt size for mounting handlebars
I'm going to be swapping my 7" t-bars for 12" t-bars this weekend. In addition to adding poly bushings, I thought I'd replace the OE bolts with Grade 8 bolts. Checked the schematic and it appears that the OE bolt size is 1/2" - 13 x 2 3/4".
The first two (mom and pop) hardware stores I've been to don't have that length so I guess I'll end up at a big box (Lowe's). However, can anyone confirm that what I have above is the correct size? Thanks. |

Thanks. And, yes, I can always just take one to the hardware store with me.

This is one area that grade 8 is truly overkill especially because they aren't carrying any load whatsoever. A standard 1/2"-13 bolt should be fine.
You could just take one of the bolts out and measure it from the end to the bottom of the hex portion. 2.5" sounds about right. Has to go through the top tree which is about 1.25"-1.50" (I'm guessing as I don't recall how thick it is). You won't find a chrome grade 8 bolt...and not sure you'd find one in stainless either. Save your money. Buy a standard grade 2 bolt and paint the hex portion black because it'll become weathered quickly. |
