Default handlebar switcheroo

Alright, guess its going to be the 'cut the wires' type of deal since its such a major pita to pull up enough wiring through the frame to get to the plugs. I know soldering is the surest way, but I would rather put in individual connectors that can be undone later if I am a mind to swap bars anytime in the future. I figure I could put them in the frame, seems to be a bunch of room there. What I am looking for are some individual male and female ends with insulating covers that will clip together securely, and are small enough so that when I stagger them in each loom, they will not be so big around to to cause problems. Maybe connectors with heat shrink ends where the wire attaches to the connector. Anyone?

Is there a good substantial reason why I should just go ahead and solder them straight up or do you think my idea will work.

Also, what gauge wires are the wires going to the controls through the bars?

Check J&P Cycles. I'm pretty sure I saw a kit in there that comes with male and female connectors and heat shrink.

I know the soldering will work, I just want more flexibility in case I want to change bars again in the near future.

I did see a kit at J&P but I want the smallest most flexible pin setup, one that will not come apart. So I thought I'd check here for some direction....

solder and heat shrink ,leave 2" of extra wire for any future repairs/changes , You ever get a short in a connection that is hard to get at ? That's why you need toheat shrinkthe connections. Wires are 22 or 24 ga...Mark...

yea I just trashed my fingers too do that wire twist'in,but solder'in seems to make for hard/unflex able places,,,dont forget to vary/space the connections so it does'nt get a big rat'n'the snake thing,,there was a thread once about which was better,,solder/crimped connectors,,,,some say solder can break/crack,,,,maybe a good question for a thread,,I sure would love to change bars,,I got 4"(lowrider)pullback/risers,with the stock bars on my 02fxd,,,its just alittle reach still,,,but I can't afford all the $bucks for all the parts,,maybe 12"apes ...someday..

ya the bars were drag specialties and cost 50 bucks!!! no biggy there but then spent almost 260 for all the stainless steel magnum cables. but it was worth it they look good and being 6ft or more its nice being all streched out verses all balled up

Alrighty now....made the change without cutting any wires. There is plenty of extra wire to pull up, its just a pita, but well worth the work. No extra splices. Now its just waiting on the clamps to arrive so I can bolt it on and finish her up. They should be here Monday...

just helped with some internals yesterday on o4 dyna, if ya drop the rear wheel there is a inspection cover that lets you get to the frame wires. The one we did was zip tied and would not pull out untill they were cut.

My bud is a bike mechanic. Makes his own choppers as well. Drags a monster too. Anyway, he came over to give mea hand, and we found the same thing on mine. And these bars that were on the bike were not original, and I'm sure they were changed at a dealer. Anyway, Mike says when you change bars and pull the harness through, you never put the harness back looped by the swingarm. We pulled the loop up into the opening under the seat so if we need to pull out the harness again it'll be a snap. He says he can't believe a dealer would pull the wires back into a tight little loop like that after changing the bars the first time. Now I'm just waiting for UPS to bring me my clamps so I can wrap it up.
