Default Planning Oil Change: Harley Oil or Other Brand

Planning an oil change on a 2012 Fat Bob with the 103 engine. I wonder if there is anything special with the Harley OEM Sinthetic 20-50 oil versus other brands. Same goes with the oil filter.

For as little oil as these things hold (compared to let's say my truck) I spend the extra and buy harley. Is it the best available? Couldn't tell ya, all I know is their oil is designed specifically to go in my harley davidson air cooled v twin motor. I'm a fan of oem parts be it fluids, replacement parts or accessories.

I use Spectro oil, but before I used The harley screamin eagle brand.

Spoke to Spectro customer service about their synthetic and regular claiming that they have the highest temp breaking point compared to other oils.

Their regular Petroleum 20/50 start breaking at 325 degrees and synthetic at 350, which also great prolongs time before temps even get that high.

I know many that use their stuff and say it's great along with S&S selling their oil (probably rebottled) by Spectro.

In addition I use their oils in my trans, primary, and engine.

Try the Schaeffer brand of oils and lubes. None better in my opinion. Google the results.

A lot of oils are made specifically for v twin air cooled engines. I wouldn't let a HD branded oil fool you into thinking its superior. HD is in the buisiness of making money, not making oil. If you pay more for HD oil it's not because it's better. They most likely buy the cheapest oil that meets their standards then re label it for profit off the brand name.

Personally I don't think it gets any better than Mobil 1 or AmsOil. Reputation for quality is reason enough. You know what it is and where it comes from. The HD Dino oil is probably just fine but if spending money on synthetics why not buy from someone that knows what their doing

Just got the 1000 mile service done and I went with Mobil 1 V Twin 20-50 and Bel Ray in the trans & primary.

Shifts WAY smoother and neutral no longer fights me when I'm looking for it.

A little research goes a long way and the input from the people on this forum is priceless.

I use Red Line Syn in mine - use what you want but it's not the place to put cheaper is okay products, for as the other poster said - there isn't as much oil in your HD as your Chevy

Doesn't matter which brand as long as it is 100% synthetic (not a blend) and the right weight for your riding style and season.

I've always used HD oil in both Harley's I've owned, but the mechanic at the indy shop I hang out at swears by Red Line 60 weight synthetic.
