Default 08 FLTR Charging System Troubleshooting

I have been following the recommended troubleshooting on here, and my '08 FLTR seems to have inconsistent test results.

I am getting a voltage reading when testing between the voltage regulator/stator pins and battery ground, which seems to indicate that I have a bad voltage regulator.

I am also getting continuity between ground and the stator pins, which would seem to indicate that I have a bad stator.

I get about 50 volts AC at 2000 rpm when I test voltage between the stator pins. I can't figure out why the stator would put out good AC voltage if it has a ground fault.

Anybody got a clue with this one?

Hi from the UK and welcome to HDF. Don't be a tease, what numbers did you measure?

Let me try that again!

With the stator wire unplugged from the voltage regulator and the ignition switch on, I show 12.5 volts between ground and the 3 pins on the voltage regulator. From what I've read, that indicated a bad voltage regulator.

With the stator still unplugged from the voltage regulator, I show continuity (0 ohms) from ground to the three contacts on the stator wire (that normally plugs into the voltage regulator). From what I've read, that means that the stator is grounded, which would mean a bad stator.

Finally, with the engine running at 2000 rpm, when I test for AC voltage between the three pins on the stator wire, I get approximately 55 volts AC. I don't understand why I would be getting good AC voltage if the stator was actually grounded. Is that possible??

I appreciate any help that I can get!
