Default Bike won't start even with clutch in. Neutral not showing.

Hey everyone,

First of all thanks for helping me on this one. I got a problem with my 2001 Sportster XLH883.

A couple weeks ago, I realized that the bike wouldn't start with clutch in when I was not in Neutral. It didn't bother me because it was fine in Neutral.

But now I got a new problem, the green neutral light won't come up and the bike only starts when it comes on, really randomly.

Ignition switch? Starter bolt?

Thanks for the help!

Does your oil light come on when you turn on the key?
Both are feed from the instrument fuse, see if it is corroded.
That fuse is fed from the key it is the red black wire.
Pull the switch and make sure it is hot with key on.

Fred, Hi from the UK and welcome to HDF.

Also check the switch on your trans, which indicates when the trans is in neutral. It's at times like this that a factory service manual earns its keep, as it will tell you where stuff is, plus a wiring diagram.

Thanks a lot for the quick answers!

I don't have any oil light coming on. But my lights, breaking lights, flashers and horn are working.

I'll look for the the fuse+the switch.

Thanks!
