89 Sportster 1200 - relay / starter questions
Hello,
I just got this 89 sportster from a friend who hadn't ridden it in a few years. I'm trying to get it to start for the first time in a while. I'm having problems with getting the starter to turn the motor over. Here's a rundown of what I've done so far:
Old gas drained and carbs cleaned.
No key so I'm jumping all 3 poles of the ignition together (lights + run)
Battery is dead (~10V) so I hooked the leads to my car battery. Did not include the bike battery. (ghetto, I know).
First go round I hit the starter button and would only get a click.
Removed the starter relay and attached +12V from the car to the starter pole. Removed spark plugs. Starter was able to turn over the motor. Replaced spark plugs. Starter was unable to turn over the motor.
Replaced the starter relay with this item:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Hooked the battery leads back to the car's battery. Again, did not include the bike battery. Hit the starter button. The starter would run until it hit the compression stroke and I'd get a lot of loud clicking.
At this point it was late and I didn't want to **** off the neighbors too much. Any ideas? My current thought is that I'm unable to get enough amps to the starter to overcome the compression. This could be from the 12ft of 5ga cable from the jumper cables.
Thanks!
