Default Volt Meter Going Bad ??

I was riding the 2010 Ultra the other day and noticed the volt meter going from it's usual 14+ volts to zero. I pulled over to try and see what the problem was and noticed no difference in my head light intensity which in my mind would indicate the charging system was faulty. After turning off and then on the bike, the gauge was back to working. Riding again it did it again except this time I tapped the gauge with my fingers and it came back to life. So now I'm at the point where I know the gauge is ether going bad or there is a loose connection on the gauge. Since I've never taken the fairing off nor am I anxious to I'd like advise from those who have looked at the gauge with the fairing off. Is it common to have the wires loose on the gauge or is it a plug type on wiring? Are the gauges prone to failure where I should be prepared to replace the gauge when removing the fairing? Any idea what a dealer would charge to do this? Any input would be appreciated.

It's just a simple connector to the gauge. Removing an outer fairing is not a big deal. Gauges are pretty good as far as not going out.

Some models have a ground wire for the Fairing on the right side a couple inches from the steering neck. I think its a 5/16" hex head. Quick and easy check.
