Default Intermittent Starter Problems

Intermittent starter problems. Push the starter button, starter relay clicks, all gauges die. Cycle ignition switch and the lights come back on, start switch will kill everything again.
When I jump the solenoid (has worked in the past to start the bike), the starter now engages and remains engaged (the bike doesn't start). The kill switch and ignition switch won't turn off or disengage the starter. I had to remove the battery cable to turn off the starter.
Starter was replaced by a Harley dealership. I would rather not spend more money at the dealership if I can avoid it and I don't want to just keep replacing parts hoping something will work.
Any ideas? Short in the solenoid, even though it's new? Starter button? Kill switch? Ignition switch? What kind of tests can I run?

I know this is a month old but.... first off, what yr and model?Hitting the start button, it will cut out lights and everything else to give full power to start.Check battery and the sticky in the EVO section under dreaded click.Get back to us I'm sure we can help keep you away from the dealer.

I forgot the basics, didn’t I? 2001 Road King.
I replaced the Start/Kill switches and haven’t had a problem since. It still doesn’t make sense to me logically. The switches tested ok multiple times. When I was trying to find the problem and the starter solenoid clicked it must have also kicked out the circuit breaker at the same time because all lights and gauges remained off even when starter button was no longer pressed. They turned back on when I cycled the ignition switch. I still don’t understand why, when I jumped the solenoid, that the starter remained engaged even when I turned off the ignition. Anyway, the problem is now fixed. I appreciate your input 86glider.
