Intermittent Starter Problems
When I jump the solenoid (has worked in the past to start the bike), the starter now engages and remains engaged (the bike doesn't start). The kill switch and ignition switch won't turn off or disengage the starter. I had to remove the battery cable to turn off the starter.
Starter was replaced by a Harley dealership. I would rather not spend more money at the dealership if I can avoid it and I don't want to just keep replacing parts hoping something will work.
Any ideas? Short in the solenoid, even though it's new? Starter button? Kill switch? Ignition switch? What kind of tests can I run?
I replaced the Start/Kill switches and havent had a problem since. It still doesnt make sense to me logically. The switches tested ok multiple times. When I was trying to find the problem and the starter solenoid clicked it must have also kicked out the circuit breaker at the same time because all lights and gauges remained off even when starter button was no longer pressed. They turned back on when I cycled the ignition switch. I still dont understand why, when I jumped the solenoid, that the starter remained engaged even when I turned off the ignition. Anyway, the problem is now fixed. I appreciate your input 86glider.
