Default Speedometer bulb flickering

First time I noticed this. Riding home from work last night....started the bike and when I put it in gear and rpms increased the speedo bulb cut out and came back a few times. I was pretty low on fuel and the low fuel indicator was on too...don't know if this plays into it. On the way home whenever rpms increased bulb would cut out until rpms leveled off. I stopped to fill the tank and did not see it happen again. Possible short in the low fuel indicator? Any other possible causes/fixes?

I appreciate any advice.

I don`t think it has anything to do with the fuel level light. Check the bulb.

I think I may have fixed it. Believe it or not the negative on the battery was loose. The increased RPMs might have been shaking the connection and causing the flickering. Hoping it was that simple.

Well, the problem is worse now. When I try to start the bike there is one loud metallic clunk and then everything on the bike is dead...no lights, indicators, nothing. I believe the battery is OK because after charging the battery the turn signal was accidentally hit instead of the ignition switch. No metallic clunk but, like before, everything went dead. Does this sound like a ground issue?

Well, I stumbled on the solution just in time for riding season. My bike had the original 2007 HD battery in it so I figured putting in a new one might be a good place to start. I took the old battery out and brought it in for the core charge (should have had it tested). I opened the box and took out some parts that were not there when I took the old battery out and set them aside, installed the new battery and same thing...bike wouldn't start. I looked at the new battery and noticed what looked like some arcing on the negative side. I looked at the spare parts I put aside and there were two brass or copper washers. I figured I'd install them and the bike started and has been starting fine ever since. Those washers were not on the battery when I bought it so I'm wondering if that was the issue all along. It was arcing on the negative terminal, so that would make it a ground problem, right?

Live and learn.
