Default Opening cam chest question

I currently have gear cams with a Wood 4 degree advance gear. I want to remove the 4 degree advance and run the cams straight up. Do I have to go thru the whole process of removing pushrods to remove the large cam gear, or can I just open the cam cover, remove the large gear bolt, and reposition the large gear? I may go ahead and remove pushrods, pull cam plate and install new o-ring on oil pump suction while in the cam chest, but wanted to know if the other is an option. Thanks for any help.

You should be able to change the rear cam gear with the cam plate in place.

Thanks - is there anything special that would need to be done prior to removing the gear, such as rotating the engine so pistons are in a certain position?

Nothing special; however, I would rotate the crank until the two timing marks on the rear cam gear and the pinion gear are aligned as a reference point.
