ok here is the deal, I am trying to help a friend of mine out with cam selection for his 03 ultra. He is looking for a little bit more on the roll power. Everyone loves to have passing power without downshifting. His 88 is fresh when he bought the bike it had an oiling issue which wiped it out so it was rebuilt on the dealers dime. He believes it is 30 over, heads have been redone with new everything, they also have been gasket matched ported. The fella here in town has built countless other bike closer to more race light to light than cruising, he keeps giving him ideas but wants to bore it out to get it to 95ci and then some sort of cam, he talked so much in circles today I thought I was the ball on a roulette wheel waiting to fall into place. He wants good midrange, and the camshaft sound, he would like to get away from new pistons boring and the rest unless he really has to. I've been beating my head off the wall reading thread after thread to load my own brain with scores of info, with that being said I'm not much further ahead so that is why I started this post. Any ideas would be great, I was looking maybe towards the SE204 or maybe something along those lines.
i believe he is running a k&n air filter in his stock box, not sure on that one should have paid more attention but not mine so memory retention for it is not there lol. He does have a set of reverse slash cut 4" slip ons and no mid pipe yet. The dealer here as usual says you need to flash it every time you do something. Since there is no one really reputable around here to do tuning without heading into Michigan I know he is listed but wants to do what he can that maybe the dealer can flash and call it a day. I believe downshifting out of overdrive to pass is required no matter the mods, just to mildly pass he would like some roll on mid range. Even my 14 I take out of 6th to pass.
a very good, very reliable mild build would be to go 95",mild 1.900/1.575 headwork set @ 10.0-1 and S&S .570 cams.good power and stock like dependabilty (easy to tune too)
Kirby's suggestion is a good one; you friend will not regret going that route.
However, if a cam only upgrade is his choice, the two cams previously suggested will give your friend a nice boost. He needs to forget about dealer flashes and maps and include a good fuel management system like the TTS Mastertune or the DJ Power Vision regardless of whether he follows Kirby's advice or sticks with a simple cam upgrade.
If your buddy is not averse to going to a 2:1 exhaust, that will also help out.
