Default New Oil Pump Early Failure?

My cuz installed a new oil pump, the high volume upgrade, in his '02 Ultra. This is a high mile motor and the oil pump was changed 2-3 years ago. Last year he rebuilt the top end, no changes in the bottom. So lets say 20k miles and the new oil pump is failing. Oil gage is very low, oil light stays on longer at cold start, and sometimes there is lifter tick at cold start. Last weekend he noticed the oil light coming on now when hot at a stop light.

Thoughts or comments for why this new oil pump might be failing early?

Hook up a pressure gauge and check pressure at sender location. Could be pressure relief valve sticking and pump is OK; could be the sending unit. Lifter tick at cold start?? what lifters? how many miles? Could be a completely separate issue. Rare for pump to fail on its own; usually something foreign has to run through the pump for failure. Don't hit the panic button yet

I would be looking at the cam chain tensioner shoes! And cam bearings while he's at it!

Not sure my cousin will have the tools to check pinion runout. When we talked yesterday I understood he installed the SE high volume upgrade kit. Just tal;ked to him and he thinks he ordered it out of the Custom Chrome catalog..... Anyway he said he had 40 PSI cruising to the shop (Daytona) this am but every time he stoped at a light the pressure dropped and sometimes his light came on.

Said he ordered a spacer for the relieve valve and was contemplating installing it. I don't know what he is talking about but it was an out of the catalog shim for the relief valve.....

He could not tell me which pump he purchased so I checked the Custom Chrome Catalog, IMO He most likely purchased the Daytona High Volume Oil Pump listed under $200 as I don't believe he would have purchased the Fueling at over $400.
