Default Valve train noise

I've just purchased a '97 Heritage Springer. According to the paperwork, it has had an engine upgrade from HD. I have no information regarding the work that was done. From the way the bike sounds, it has had cam upgrades. So would that make it have a more top-end lifter noise? Btw, the engine has 18,500 miles on it.

Cam profiles can add to top end noise, so can different springs, the lifters themselves, etc.

If you have adjustable pushrods you might give them a little more preload.

Very easy to pop open the pushrod tubes to see if you do indeed have adjustables. If so you can set the preload to .125" to .140". Some cam profiles are noisier than others......

While they're open, if you have a dial indicator you can also measure the lift of the lobe and then multiply by 1.625 to give you an idea as to what cam could possibly be in there....
