S&S 111 with rear cyl piston failure
I planned on buying 111,113.117 etc. Send it to a shop like hillside Kirby pushrod etc to get inspected and up the compression etc.
Would this be a bad idea to rebuild a blown motor. ? The rear cyl in cracked and rear cyl is scored. Motor can be had for 1000$

Not sure I follow. What motor is blown? The one that's for sale? Buying a new S&S motor to replace a blown motor but sending that new motor out for machine work before install rather than install as delivered? Or is the motor you bought the motor that blew? If rear cylinder is the only issue with the "blown" motor, why not fix the problem? Much cheaper........ Obviously I am confused.

For a boat anchor maybe...Or a coffee table base.
On Harley motors since the EVO, the oil is pulled from the sump below transmission or on a Softail from the oil bag below the seat. Nether has a screen, then thru the oil pump and you are correct most then goes thru the filter and on thru the engine. However, if you look at the oil flow in a service, some in the cam plate actually is distributed to some locations there with out a filter. The balance cams in a Softail has a screen. The oil after it falls down, it is picked up by the return side of the oil pump and dumped in the clean sump or oil bag. When you have a major failure, all this metal gets into the bag or sump and in the oil pump and cam body passages.
Interestingly, EVO and older filtered Harley's actually filter the oil only on return that is dumped into bag or sump tank. I can only guess this mindset was cause by older non filtered bikes and Harley engineered a filter as afterthought due to competition.

Buying that motor is basically writing a blank check to Scott or Kirby or whoever you send it to for a complete tear down, inspection and repair. By the time you get done, you will very likely have spent enough to buy a new crate motor. No way would I make the purchase.
