Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Did the top end tear down and followed the service manual but when i got the bottom end i removed all the bolts and oil lines to the crankcase. I tried taking the crankcase off the frame and having issues with pulling it off.
Model Harley? By crankcase, you do mean the motor without the transmission? Trying to remember what I did to pull the motor out of my tour glide last winter - electric and oil lines of course, exhaust, carb, primary, oil cooler, front mount, top stabilizer, and the transmission bolts. It was heavy, all I could do was lift, turn a bit sideways and set it down on some 2x4s I screwed together for a stand, no way I could get up with it, my old knees won't handle that, it's supposed to weigh around 160 lbs.
I don't know your experience or knowledge, so please don't be insulted by this - If you by any chance are trying to pull the whole motor/primary/trans assembly, most big twins other than softails have the swingarm pivot bolt running through the back of the transmission casting, which also acts as the rear motor mount. The transmission doesn't have to come out with the motor, and if you leave it in, you don't have to mess with the pivot bolt. If you do leave it in, it needs to be supported when unbolted from the motor. I know softails are different, but have never done anything with them.
2007 fatboy. I did the top tear down and removed the primary case. Removed the front motor mount and transmission bolts. Nothing is holding it and it can come off just that it weighs a ton. Just trying to see if there is any tricks to it.
Yep followed the service manual and watched videos. Its loose on the frame the issue isnt that. Its lifting it up and out of the frame. Weight is heavy for me cuz im doing it myself and have a bad back.
On my '09 i had the cylinders off and then used a long 1/2" extension to lift the transmission up a little. You have some locator dowels so it needs to be able to slide off of those. This allowed the crankcase to lean forward and down a wee bit and separate. Reinstall went the same way.
