new here whip me if I need it !
I am considering up purchasing a kit from ss to make my 2005 883 into a 1200. are there inherent problems that come along with this upgrade. such as I have been told I will need an oil cooler. True?
Thanks
No, you don't unless you like idling in traffic for hours on end.
First, go to Hammer Performance, they're the best in the biz for 1200 conversions (Actually, the in vogue conversion right now is their 1275 kit, which I'm pretty sure they have one where you can reuse your 883 heads and still use pump gas). DO NOT buy that shitty canned Screamin' Eagle kit. Hammer machines each set of cylinders specific to the matched pistons. SE are all made in bulk.
Second, make sure you rejet for the moon during break-in. If you're using the CV40, put in a 45 pilot, two shims under needle, and a 200 main jet to start. The after break in work your way down to reasonable.
That's really it, have fun.

No need for a new carb, just a rejet. That CV40 is a great carb for anything under 100hp.
Big bucks, visit the Sportster section, where you will find plenty of members who have done Hammer builds and even documented them for us. They are very popular, very effective and the way to go IMHO!
go the Hammer route, you'll get a better piston to cylinder wall fit that a preboxed kit from S&S( i'm not bashing SS i like thier stuff and use a lot of it)
it will most likely end up being less cash too. 45 pilot, 170 0r 180 main jet, 200 is too much. you might get away with sending them your original cylinders to bore, the preice to machine them ends up being close to new ones usually, but check with them on pricing to be sure, but do not fear, they do great work.

For a street kit the SE 536 is the go-to cam. Hammer's even got their own grinds now too, maybe better than the 536.
Back when I did an 88" Sportster I went with Red Shift 630/585 cams. That bike could pull an oak tree out of the ground with that early close/tall lift intake cam. Not cheap tho, over $400 I think.
1450 XL's can really rip.
3 13/16" X 3 13/16".
Built a bunch of those years ago, in various configurations.
Easy to have those at 110-115 hp, 100 ft/lbs.
