Default HD Stage 3 or 5 kit for stock 103

I’ve got a good sized gift card credit at my dealer and am thinking about using it for a stage 3 or 5 upgrade to a 2015 Road King I’m picking up next week.

The dealer has has a stage V “tire shredder” kit that they want to move and offered me a killer deal on it. $2800 installed. The kit normally sells for $2650. Their service dept mistakenly ordered the wrong kit for a customer so they’ve been sitting on it for a while and want to move it, so they offered me a huge discount. (It’s still NIB, not previously installed or anything lol)

I was was originally thinking of the standard 110 stage 3 kit, which sells for about the same price as they are offering the stage 4 kit for ($1850), and the labor will be about the same, so both kits will end up around the same. The 4 will require a new AC, since it’s a 58mm TB.

Anyway, looking at the charts HD provides on the kits, it looks like the stage 3 kit makes considerably more torque off the line, but the stage 4 seems better overall.

Which would you choose? I know there is more bang for the buck to be had from independent tuners, but they won’t take the $1k credit I have, so stick with these two kits:

Several of my buddies have the stage 4 kit, and they tell me if you're gonna upgrade, go all the way. No reason to spend money on stage 1-3 and then go to 4.

I'd say do the stage 5.

Post edit: I didn't know Harley offered a stage 5 kit. Used to be stages 1-4. A buddy of mine bought a 2018 Heritage this summer and got a stage 4 kit installed. New one on me. Yep, get the tire shredder IMHO.

Yeah it was news to me as well. I thought the S4 was heads, tb and injectors plus the S3 kit. But that’s what’s in this Tire shredder kit. So it looks like stage 4 is stage 3 with heads, and tire shredder is all that and the TB/injectors...

This is a stage 4 kit too. It’s stsge 3 plus heads and a different cam. The tire shredder kit is all that, higher compression, throttle body, injectors and a different again cam,

I don’t even know what the hell they are talking about lol. Both the above and the “tire shredder” kits are labeled as “stage IV”. So go figure...

More important than the kit choice is fuel management and tune. While your dealer may be different, dealers don't have a good track record when it comes to tuning performance upgrades. There are three dealers in my area and they send their performance upgrades to an independent tuner; fortunately, he is one of the best in the country. However, some dealers will not warranty a performance upgrade if tuned outside. So, discuss fuel management systems and tuning with the dealer and come to an agreement before sealing the deal.

Very good point.

Dealer isn't going to touch tuning. I'll order another power vision and I'll get a starting tune from Jamie at FuelMoto. I plan on getting their E-Series 2:1 pipe as well, which has 12 and 18mm bungs. I also have a wideband autotune pro kit I never used on my other bikes, which I will use to dial it in.

And the bike I'm planning this for is out of warranty anyway, so no issue there.

I talked to Zippers and Fuel Motor, both said unless you are going over 125 Hp, you don't need the Hi flow injectors or the 58mm throttle body. Check with the dealer and see what it would be if you just took the TB and Injectors (assuming injectors come with) and sell them. I sold my on ebay and made back $400

Actually, it turns out its not the "tire shredder" kit, just the normal stage 4 : https://www.harley-davidson.com/stor...ck-highlighted

Jugs, pistons, cams, heads, and tappets. Effectively turning the 103 into the CVO 110.
