oil pan gasket...hylomar?
pulled my oil pan and ran it through the parts cleaner to wash out any metal debris from when my bottom end went out and was reading manual on oil pan installation. the manual mentioned using hylomar on the flanges. is this a necessary sealant with the metal gasket? the oil pan is super clean and the mating flange on the transmission housing is also clean. the engine is out of the bike right now so it's super easy to line up the pan and gasket. i was wondering if the use of hylomar was to help keep the oil pan in position if installing from the rear like you would when the engine is in the bike.

HD Service Manuals mention Hylomar occasionally but don't specify which Hylomar (they make several products). I found Hylomar Blue online for about $10/oz (quite expensive). I also found an equivalent Permatex product #85420 for about half price. It even says "Compare to Hylomar Blue" on the package:

The Permatex #80060 (mentioned by "grasscat" above) is a bit less expensive than the #85420 and will probably work ok. All 3 cure (let all cure a bit before putting stuff together),are fuel and oil resistance and provide sealant properties in both low and high temperature applications. Halomar Blue and #85420 are rated for a bit higher temp applications than #80060.
Of course HD recommends the highest priced product.

This is relabeled hylomar (polyester-urethane based-never sets ups, stays tacky). Same color, just a little easier to apply, can get at Orielly, advance, autozone, etc. Use brake cleaner to clean up or remove. YD

As an ex-Rolls-Royce engineer I can report that they are responsible for Hylomar and you have great taste! IIRC it was known within the company as SQ13, after Squires the creative chemistry chap who invented it, for use on their piston engines. Unfortunately in the current worldwide corporate culture we suffer from these days, the history is conveniently omitted from their website. As another example we have Fort Dunlop here in Birmingham UK, where Dunlop tyres were born, but we are not supposed to know that today!
