New Camshafts and Tensioners

New Camshafts and Tensioners
I installed new S&S 509 cams into the original HD camshaft support plate but I forgot to first install the rear cam tensioner. I removed both the front and rear cam tensioners to install new shoes / pads. I spent about an hour trying to get the rear tensioner on while the camshafts are installed. What are my options? Do I have to press the cams out? Is it possible to install by hand with cams installed already?

I assume the bike is the '99 Heritage and the OP is replacing OEM shoes with something similar. There is a tool that will allow R/R of the inner tensioner with the cams in place but it is expensive and I don't know if the guy that made the tool is still selling them. Have not used the Cujo tool but have read posts on this and other HD forums that some say it works but most say it does not work on the inner tensioner. The Cujo tool is $35 and a dealer or an independent tech would most likely charge $45-$50 to do the job. I would say, remove the cams and do it right but you should replace the outer cam bearings unless you can find a socket or piece of PVC that will press against the inner race to remove.

I ended up getting a tool I found on Youtube for $129. Yeah I know I got ripped off but I didn't feel like pressing the cam shafts out. Plus I would have had to pull the new bearing off the front camshaft, buy a new bearing, etc.. I'm moving on to installing the cam support plate tomorrow. Do you guys reuse the two sprocket retention bolts / screws? Or do you buy new one's? The shop manual indicates to use a new rear sprocket bolt and the S&S kit only came with a new crank sprocket bolt. Thanks for all the input!

This project gets more interesting.. while researching the cam sprocket retention bolt / screw question I found out the latest kit is part # 25566-06 (which replaces part # 25533-99A). Also, I was reminded that the Koyo B-148 inner bearings are the one's you want to use. Unfortunately, the S&S kit I got had the INA bearings which I installed yesterday!

I made some progress today.. I went to the local HD dealership and got new bolts for the sprockets and two SE inner cam bearings which are marked B-148. I installed them until they were slightly recessed. I stopped working on it after torquing the cam support plate to 90 in-lb. The shop manual states: "Rotate engine until the oil pump is in neutral center with no load on it." The rear tire is off the lift so I can easily rotate the tire but at what point do I stop? Do I just keep rotating the tire while torquing it down?

I have about 90 miles on the bike with the S&S 509 cams. The bike has a noticeable power and sound improvement! I'm enjoying the cams! I also installed the No. 48 jet. I'm going to pull the new plugs to check their condition next weekend. The left muffler has a hole in it so I got a pair of NOS Screamin Eagle slip-ons coming this week.
I tried posting the iPhone video but it's not working.. I even posted it on IMGUR but there's no audio once it's posted on their site..
