Default Need Help Building More Torque

My buddy picked up a 2006 Street Glide which has the 88ci twin cam, and the cv carburator. The previous owner had S&S 510 gear drive cams installed, a stage-1 air filter, and Rinehart true dual exhaust. The carb was re-jetted and it actually runs pretty good.

Here's the issue:..... my buddy is a pretty big man. He's 6'4" and weighs about 320 lbs..... therefore we have a power to weight ratio situation. Torque moves mass...which is why I'm focusing on trying to build a little more of it. Unfortunately I am dealing with a budget here. My first thought was to go bigger with the cubic inches, and get him a 95" big bore kit, but I'm wondering if that alone is going to do that much?

If my budget was say: $1000 ….what would be the recommendation to try and get him a little more torque? I realize $1000 isn't much to work with,....but I'm hoping it's enough to wake it up a little more. Whether it's bigger cams, some head work??? Just not sure what the best route to take is.

Thanks for your input -

Id go back to stock style exhaust- or a good 2 into 1 system. That should be under $1000.

How about different pulleys and new belt to suit?

Yeah, up the cubes first. With gaskets you're in that about $700 if you do the install yourself.

I wouldn't put the stock exhaust back on. The combo of parts is more important than one particular piece. 1000 bucks might be a little tight to get a big bore and a dyno tune. Head work gets expensive but if you want h.p. that's where it's at. If it were my bike and my money I'd talk to one of the guys on here that make their money building these motors...scott at hillside...kirby at v-twin. Takes all the guess work out of it and keeps you from wasting money.

Of course, Kirby's solution will work but it will bust the $1000 budget. Here's another approach; convert the 25/36 primary to 24/37 along with an S&S 509 cam set might get the result. The 24/37 primary is harder to find these days but they are out there for less than $600. Another gearing option would be the Twist Gear setup which installed with the 32/70 secondary will increase torque in the first four gears 10% while retaining the 3.15 final drive; or get a greater increase in 104 torque with the Twist Gear and a 33T trans sprocket. Another option under $600, plus labor of course. Twist Gear labor would be the same as replacing the MDG; the kit includes a new MDG and cluster shaft.

I run the Twist Gear setup in my all bore 107" in a 2002 FLHT and love it.

At $1000, your best bet is go 95-80 on the bore and add an adjustable ignition (DTT).

$1000 won't get you much unless you get lucky on used parts. depending on type of cam, you can get a different one meant for all low end trq, then get bike tuned. combination with changing the sprockets as well would go a long way. tuning is a must though if you make any big changes.
