Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Well I bought another Shovelhead - 1981 FLT & my original gril 1981 FXA got pissed off. So now she decided she does not want me to use the electric start anymore. Well this old sht does not have enough knees left to kick the old girl, and I have replaced the starter (all *****) few years back & solinoid 2 days ago with no luck. Let me know what you thing kit is..
I am SO familiar with this sound. I know it's not a direct comparison (Reaper's engine is a Twin Cam), but before I figured out that Reaper's engine was firing too soon, causing kickback on startup, she used to eat at least one starter clutch (bendix) every year. One year she blew up four of them!
So, if you have engine kickback issues on startup that's what will cause this issue. Get it sorted or you'll be replacing the starter clutch on the regular.
It is actually a fairly easy job.
1. Pull the primary cover
2. Unbolt the solenoid
3. Unbolt the starter
4. lightly tap one the starter shaft to move the starter back away from the primary cover
5. Wiggle the shaft off of the shifter lever and pull it out of the drive gear
Now I might see a bigger problem, take a look at this shaft and let me know if the portion that goes into the drive gear looks normal. It looks a bit wore off too me.
The starter gear appears to be okay. It does seem like there is a lot of end play and a little backlash though, but that could be attributed to having only 1/2 depth tooth engagement, which is allowing it to rock back in forth. I would say that shaft is done.... I will probably change out the whole lot of parts while I have pulled the starter out.
