06 XL1200C has gas in the oil

I have gas in my oil. Can easily smell the gas on the dipstick. Petcock is good, only flows fuel when it has a vacuum. I'm assuming I have a float issue in the carb.

Has anyone encountered this problem? If so, what did the problem turn out to be?

Thanks for any help you have,
Donny

how do the plugs look? if you are running rich, it is possible over time get excessive fuel in the oil. also, do you do short trips? engine needs to run normal temps to help vaporize and get rid of these contaminates via the breather system.

I wouldn't surprise me if you noticed your oil level showing over full too (if it's real bad). I have had this happen on carbureted engines before, in my case it was a bad needle & seat in the carb. One drop of gas at a time dripping into the cylinders while it's not in use, then it inevitably seeps past the rings and you've got gas in your crank case. You should drop your oil then somehow figure out how you can shut off the fuel supply when not in use, maybe even run the engine till the float bowl is empty prior to leaving it for longer periods of time and see if that helps to find the cultrate.

I just bought the bike for my girlfriend. The same day after bringing it home, I was going over with her how to check things before riding. That's when I found the smell of gas on the oil dipstick. I took the fuel hose off of the carb. No fuel flowed thru the petcock until there was a vacuum applied. Still, I plan to turn it off after each use, though I've never had to do that with my Fatboy. Plugs looked good - a little lean on the front jug. I've removed the carb. I plan on taking the bowl off and cleaning it, checking the float and needle and replacing it needed.

Thanks,
Donny
