I bought the tool from Fueling. It’s a decent tool but a clamp on dial indicator is more versatile.

Some sources say you must measure run out without the cam plate in place, others say the opposite. Which is true, or does it even make a difference?

Since I have been on this forum for 17 years, I am well aware that "it's an HD forum". I showed you several ways to measure crank runout and your reply to that post does not make any sense. I think a reply like "thanks for taking the time to post photos, blah, blah.............would have been a more appropriate reply. Anyway, I hope you got your questions anwered.

Without. The cam plate can constrain the runout..

Why would you need the cam plate in place? Secondly, if you leave the plate on, how are you going to access the shaft? It barley protrudes out of the plate.

Always check run out on opinion shaft when replacing cams. There shouldn't be any question as to whether or not the cam plate should be on or off... You're taking it off to do the cams..
