I've finally bought a modern HD, it's an evo.
Shovel frame, Trease race engineering cases, ss wheels, rods, pistons and jugs. Heads are revtech twin plugged.
The primo engine pulley carked it 2 days ago. It took out the alternator and rotor. Lotsa swarf and noise as it died.
I've pulled it apart and noticed a fair bit of end float, approx 40 thou.
Has the pinion nut come loose or is this crank float?
Any help is greatly appreciated, guess I'll have to buy a shop manual now.
Different era bike, but I freaked myself out the other day when I measured my crankshaft endplay with the compensator off of my 14 SGS. It was 0.110"!! Spec is max 0.013"....... I found out that the endplay needs to be checked WITH the comp in place and torqued. Measured at 0.008" that time. Maybe see what you have after you put the parts back on?
With a Timken setup the bearings are pressed on the sprocket shaft, there really shouldn't be any end play felt. However the endplay can't be checked without a sprocket in place and bolted down. The spec for the end play is 0.001" to 0.005". You need to attach a dial indicator to check it. It's hard to check accurately with the motor assembled. I'd bolt a sprocket on and see if the approximate 0.040" disappears. Make sure you torque the sprocket on to spec.
If the pulley came loose when the motor was running, the crank may have shifted from the outer Timken bearing.
I've fitted up a later compensator and clutch with newish chain. Rattled it up nisentite and now have 2and a gnats thou float. Can I get away with this set-up, will I need a slipper to stop chain waggle?
Yes, if I'm reading your question correctly. When rattled up the end float clocks at just over 2 thou when nudged with a prybar. I've got an 80 inch shovel engine that has 4and a half thou when pried. When the primo centre got chewed out it took the alternator rotor and stator with it, I was astonished that everything stayed together, I take back all the horrid things I ever said about evos.....
My clutch basket and compensator are as square as I can get them. The chain is neither loose nor tight.
