All,
im redoing this post since i think my previous was in the wrong section.
Bike 2003 Ultra Classic, 88ci no mods 15k miles
I have been experiencing what seems to be an excessive amount of engine vibration between 1800-2200 RPM's enough that my feet, handlebars and fairing vibrate like crazy. It does it whether i am accelerating thru the range or pulling in the clutch and letting the motor decelerate thru the range.
So today i decided to pull the cam chest apart and take a look at what i have. it seems to me the wear is borderline to unacceptable. anyone think this may be the culprit of my woes?
Assuming guage is accurate and measurements are accurate; .0035" is not causing the vibration you describe. I would run gear drive cams with that runout; I think you need to be looking somewhere else; sheared front motor mount maybe? clutch hub bearing gone south? loose fastener somewhere?
Thanks for the reply gents. I checked all mounts and also replaced the front rubber mount with no change. All fasteners have been checked and rechecked.
At that mileage my two rear mounts were causing excessive vibes. I replaced the rear doughnuts in a couple hours and the bike handled like new and vibrated much less. check out the glide pro videos. Harley updated them.
well i have the inner primary apart and the inner primary bearing seem fine as well as i fellt no slop at all in the clutch. I will have to check the rear mounts on the tranny as well now
while you have the primary off, check to see if you have any play in the tranny input/main shaft
i had a tranny roller bearing go out that i felt added vibes, but you would probobly hear it to
I assume this is an 88B.
You did run out checks but did you check for any axial and radial slop?
Radial slop wouldn't necessarily show up during a run out check.
My 05 88B / 95 has "supposedly" had the crank bearings replaced twice because of vibration that you could feel through the grips. It was under extended warranty then. It's happening again and I'm currently tearing it down myself to find the problem. 101k miles.
