Engine Died, Won't turn completely over.
Hey guys and gals,
Browsing through the forums and noticed a lot of helpful people on here so I thought I'd see if someone might be able to help me out. The other day I was coming home from work and was stopped at a stop light, sat there for about a minute and a half and the light turned green. AS SOON as I began to open the throttle the engine died, hadn't started letting off clutch, I was in first gear. Tried to start it back up at the light and the engine just kept on cranking, but wouldn't turn over completely. So I pushed it off to the side and let it sit for a couple minutes while I made a few phone calls looking for some knowledge, a rescue, or both. I let the bike sit, completely off, for about 10 minutes and tried to fire her up again, with zero success. The local Harley shop came and picked me up (Free of charge I might add to their merit) and trailered the bike back to my apartment for me, where it has sat all weekend long. I tried to fire it up today and ran into the same problem of continuous cranking, without actually firing up. The engine doesn't seem labored at all, no grinding noises, the fuel injector kicks on when I flip the switch, the battery has been tested and is good. Oil was changed about 2 months ago. Everything with the engine is stock, with exception to a stage 2 air intake, vans and hines pipes (been on the bike since about 2 weeks after I got it almost 5 years ago), and a Cobra FI2000R powertuner that has been on the bike for a little over 2 months. It is a 2008 Dyna Wide Glide, anniversary edition if that makes a difference. I admit that I don't know as much about the inner working of my bike as I should, but I have been slowly learning the last few years, and am at my wit's end trying to think of what the problem could be. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! |
Are you still on the original battery? That would be my first suspect. Take it out and see if it takes a charge with a 2 amp trickle charger. Sometimes the test says it good, but they won't take a charge. Ask someone for a digital multimeter. Battery should be 12.75-13.25 after charging, or won't crank.
I am not much of a mechanic, but with 2 boats, I play with batteries a lot. I would have let the dealer fix it, once he picked it up. I am surprised they gave you a free tow to your place. |
If your Cobra tuner is the piggyback type, try to unplugging it and plugging in the ECM and see if it starts. If so you would have found your problem.

Battery is only about 3-4 months old. Replaced it at the beginning of the season as it wasn't holding a charge. I'll still try hooking it up just in case.
i didn't even think that the cobra tuner might be the culprit, I'll definitely check that out as well |
