Europe Summer 2017

I am seriously considering Air Freighting "Darla " into Europe early in May, and Touring for the summer. The plan is to camp as much as possible and do a counter Clockwise route as far West as Portugal and as Far East as Romania/Ukraine (Ukraine is the birthplace of my Grandfather). Landing in Holland (my Mothers birthplace). I have been reading "100 Roads In Europe " and will use it as a baseline for the route. Of course once I go, if I do, I will be reporting the ride in the "Journeys " thread.

I will be spending a lot of time in this section reading to get ready.

Very cool. On my bucket list as well. I've done some 3 day trips on rentals. Laws and courtesies, change by city, region and country. Autos in London have no respect for anybody. Get travel health insurance with evacuation. I've had good luck with these people, send them an email. quotes@tripinsurancestore.com
If I remember correctly, in Spain you need a backup pair of eyeglasses if you require vision correction.

Looking forward to reading your posts.

Perfect. This is the kind of info I need before I go. Thanks!

At first blush it looks like I can use my iPhone for Data, calls and Texting for $10 a day when I use it with my Canadian plan. Of course I will use WIFI at every opportunity. It means I should be able to update almost daily to "Journeys".

I will be getting a 7 before I go for the new camera. Also, I will be taking my DSLR and my Mac laptop which has Photoshop in it.

Lots of free public wifi in europe. Not everywhere but a lot more than the US. London has Wifi routers in their old Telephone booths. Best way to justify preserving them.

Good to hear. Often in the remote areas of the Western states I would see 4/5 bars when I was in the middle of nowhere; and a bar and a half in town. And DATA moving faster on the Cell networks than WIFI.

I even had to turn WIFI off and use Cellular in some places.

I did up this as a base map of where I would go, not counting side trips, changes, etc, it is about 16,000 Kilometers and it would be run Counter Clockwise. I am thinking I would limit my riding distance on travel days to about 300 to 400 kilometers between tent sites. If I go for the five months, that would give me about 2 days off for every day riding. Lots of time for site seeing and local little trips.

Target dates for getting to certain areas are end of June for Switzerland (HOG rally), and mid August for St Petersberg Harley days.

Everything is open for changes, and what was going on in Europe motorcycle wise would be something I would switch up for. I would want to hit a lot of rally's and events if possible.

I will need a damn good map before I go. I might even invest in the unthinkable for me .... a GPS unit. Maybe I can get a decent app for my iPhone 7.

I think in France as well. But if you travel for such a time on a bike, and you have prescription glasses :D, make sure you bring backups.

September 5-10 is European Bike Week in Faakersee (Austria).

Re your data plan you can consider buying a European SIM card for your for phone. Currently data subscription are limited per country, using data in another country is considered roaming and more expensive. Effective 15 June 2017 charging extra for roaming is no longer allowed. So with a local EMEA card I think you can be much cheaper than the CAD$ 10 p/day.
