Default Renewing a old Softail..and keeping it under $4,000

So I had this 91 FXSTC sitting in my barn. Bought it a few years ago for $3,800. Was not looking for another HD. I messed with them a lot in the 90's but sold the last one 10yrs back. Last time I was buying these things 8k was about the going rate for a rough but decent big twin. So seemed like a steal, but looks like the market has dropped with factory overproduction and the OCC craze that happened in between. So I guess just a decent deal. Ran great but ugly as sin,..just figured I would sell it or fix it up...then it just sat till a few weeks ago. Decided to fix her up as a low budget fun cruiser. Nice change after the high dollar showy bar blasters I used to fancy. Plus, black is in and cheap, so no need polish and chrome out everything to look nice...times have changed and so have tastes. So here is the beast as I found her.

Welcome. I'd change all the fluids and get it running tip top and ride it as is...I like simple motorcycles though so I'm a bit biased.

I like simple too. But just hated the look on this one as purchased and hate ratty. So the girl had oil leaks, some rust, filthy sloppily repainted engine, dents, fugly fender, hacked dash wiring, rusty spokes, rusty other stuff. On the bright side, engine runs great and supposedly has a mild "build", S&S carb, dyna ign, no hacking of and straight frame, good seat and good pipes. Guess you can say she had good bones. Original powder coat on frame is salvageable, so that makes life easy. Will hopefully get the engine a fresh coat of wrinkle, already re-coated the tranny. Gonna lower her (im short), polish the chrome that is good, paint what is not, re-lace the front wheel, maybe polish one or two aluminum things if I feel she needs a touch of bling, but mostly just black her out and call it done. Looking to make some Z bars, adjust Fwd controls back about 2", re-foam the seat, do tins in flat with some custom badges, add original bobtail fender, loose the front fender, change fluids and call it done. That is about as "custom" as I am looking to get on this one. Done plenty of heavy duty ground up building and chopping back in the day and have no interest in that now. Just a nice clean low budget bike. Figure a used fender, some paint, gaskets, used dash and misc should keep this project at about 4k total for a pretty nice ride. We will see so stay tuned. Will post more pics tonight and as things develop. Thanks

Goodness you don't mess around when you clean one up, that's going to make a nice ride.
What fenders are you putting on it?
FYI the frames are e coated, that is an electrostaticly painting system.
Subscribed, keep the photos coming.

I'm with Cruiser on this one, when you tear something down you go to town. I bet it will be a sweet Softail custom in no time.

Or you could always do a complete tear down and rebuild!
