Default Ignition Coil Wiring

I'm working on getting my ignition coil wired up on my 84 FXST, and I want to confirm the wiring.

From the harness that connects to the ignition module, there are two wires that run up to the coil - one is pink and the other is white. From what I understand, the pink wire is the ground to the coil (which causes it to fire) and the white is the + for the module itself.

Per the wiring diagrams I've found, these wires connect to each of the posts on the coil - with the white wire tying into the white positive wire that comes down from the kill switch on the handlebars, supplying power to both the coil and to the ignition module.

My question - does it matter which post on the coil the two white wires go to (together) and the pink wire? The posts are not labeled, that's why I ask...

Here's what my coil looks like:

The pink wire is your tach wire. The two white wires should go on the upper connection and the pink wire and a blue wire from the module go to the bottom connection, if it has a factory ignition module. The blue wire is what grounds the coil and ungrounds it to fire.

I don't have a blue wire coming from my module - but all the others seems to be accounted for, so that's why I thought the pink wire was the ground to the coil.

Here's what I'm working with:

You should have 7 wires coming from the module:

Red, Black, Green go to the pickup in the cone.
White to the top of the coil.
Blue to the bottom of the coil with the pink wire from the tach.
A wire, probably violet, going to the VOES.
A short black wire with a ring on it going to ground, probably at the module mounting bolt. Note that this wire is not in the harness/connection.

It won't fire without that blue wire.

It's got 7 wires, just not a blue one.

red, green, black strip to cone
purple voes
black ground
whte and pink to coil

Is it possible that the pink wire is in place of the blue one and there is no tach wire? How could I test that?

Im at a loss because the blue wire just isn't there...

On a 7 pin module I show.

#1. White-ign power
#2 Black/white tracer-Pickup sensor ground
#3 Red-Pickup sensor power
#4 Pink- Coil (-)
$5 Green- Pickup sensor signal
#6 Purple- VOES
#7 Black- Ign ground

Hope that helps..

Thanks Griz - that's exactly how mine is setup, so I think I should be all set. I hope...

Just don't let the smoke out of the wiring.

The smoke?

I just wonder why that wire is pink rather than blue...

Is there a tach on the bike? As long as one of the wires from the module goes to the coil negative side, it should work. If all the other wires are accounted for, then pink it is.
