Default Battery blew up on me yesterday

So I was riding, smelled something....Off.... Move to pull over, and BOOM. no power. Smokes pouring out between my legs. The whole bit.
now I'm no professional, but does anybody have an idea, where I should start to check, as to the cause.
I'm thinking regulator,

WTH! He's not asking about what battery to buy, he's wants to know what caused his battery to explode.

Dead short on a big cable or the internal plates collapsed, seen a few pop the sides & top off but yours is a first melted out like that.

He is saying Harley Batteries don't explode. I stick with the East Penn battery, same as the Harley. Sold as Duracell at Batteries Plus.

I like the collapsing plate theory. OP, what brand was the battery? As soon as you saw the made in China part of your battery you should have stayed away.

Did this post get deleted and reposted? Voltage Regulator. Mine died and when that happens voltage to the battery is about 18 volts. It is a bad situation and I would like to know how to get a warning when the regulator takes a puke. Mine hadn't melted yet but was smoking and bulging.

Install a voltage meter/gauge? A simple solution for over voltage would be a red LED installed with a resistor so it would only illuminate when the voltage gets to say 15 or 16 volts. Never tried it but just a thought. YD

Any battery that has wet cells can explode, no matter whose name is on it.

Make sure all connections are secure on the new battery cables, and once running check the charging system to make sure it is working correctly.

Don`t use a Chinese battery.

Yankee Dog: I agree and think the only way to know when the Voltage Regulator has died would be a meter/gauge mounted on the handlebars, or somewhere. I was definitely rattled when I pulled in my driveway and had sulfuric smoke coming from under the seat.
