You're not going to find the code. Calling the museum is not going to help either.
Do have any original paint parts yet?
Do you have the original Harley paint number?
From my research and to the best of my knowledge, in 1983, Harley started working with the PPG custom paint group to come up with new fancy paints. They used these new paints on a few special models and by about 1986 had perfected it, using it on beautifully painted bikes like the new FXSTC.
I went through this on a one year (1983), one model, special edition color. I ended up finding an original can of the air dry acrylic and doing a spray out. (We didn't want to use the 35 year old original paint, cause we wanted it cleared) I sent that to the PPG lab, and they made up a modern formula for it. That's the only way to get it perfect.
I, like you, had a paint code from PPG, and although it was very close, (the tint was correct) my painter could see that the original paint (we also had some original paint parts, along with the OEM paint) had both gold and silver pearl. The paint code we had did not have gold pearl in it.
Good luck.

1985 wideglide paint
Hi and thanks for all the help. I have searched hi and low for this paint. It seems candy Burgundy was only used for a couple of years at the very most. I have tried to get the paint matched by specialists but they are struggling. My only hope is my painter tinting a colour from Kawasaki which is very close.
It's like the seats, very very rare to find a good aftermarket one.
Once again thanks for all your input. I will let you know how I get on and post some pics of the bike shortly.
Cheers
Steve
