Lifter swap advive
#21
I had one of my lifter blocks work loose late last fall on my Heritage during a ride. I posted here, and got both the "don't need the alignment tool" and "yeah, use the tool" responses.
I don't have any EVO experience at all, so naturally I overdid it and ordered two of the tools, to make damn sure I had that lifter block in the right place. (If I remember right, the service manual tells you which of the four holes to put the alignment tool in, to get an oil passage hole lined up correctly, I think). So I put one alignment tool in that hole, and the second tool in the opposite hole.
With both alignment tools snugged down finger tight to keep the block from moving, I inserted and tightened two of the bolts. Then I removed the two alignment tools and tightened the last two bolts.
Sure enough, when I was done, I could see the block was shifted slightly from where it was originally. So either the block was assembled in a slightly wrong place originally, or by using two tools I've got it in a slightly wrong place now. I left it where the tools put it, and everything seems to be fine so far. In the end, I don't think it makes any difference if you use the tool or not.
