Default Inner Primary Alignment 87 FLST

Hello All

I have oil leaks in several spots, and while cleaning things up and checking things I placed the inner primary on to see if it fit properly. I didn't have the big O-ring installed at the time, an noticed that I could see day light between the inner primary and the engine case with all the bolts just snugged up.

So I loosened the bolts that hold the primary to the trans, and tightened up the 4-bolts that hold the primary to the engine case. That opened a gap at the trans end. So clearly either the engine, or tranny is not lined up correctly.

So, at this point should I loosen the tranny, and see if it will shift into alignment? Or should I loosen all the engine mounting bolts and try to shift it that way ?

I have always had oil leakage around the front of the primary, and I think this
alignment problem is the cause.

What is the correct way to align the engine to trans and get this inner primary to lay flat against both?

Thanks

The manual calls for you to loosen both the tranny and engine mount bolts, allowing them to self align when you tighten down the inner primary.

Also I would torque it down once before you put the o ring in there to get it close first.

That stupid big o ring is easy to pinch.

Make sure your belt is loose too. I just replaced my inner and the belt was preventing the tranny from moving up enough to align properly.

Make sure the engine and transmission sit flat on their mounting areas, no space between the frame and engine, no space between the transmission plate and transmission case, at the areas of the mounting bolts. If there is a space, you need to shim it.

This, and yes it make a big difference if you don't. Oil leaks and added vibration are guaranteed and cracked or broken parts the worse case.

Remove the inner, loosen the motor blots and top mount and all the trans mount bolts. Torque the rear motor bolts then check the front to frame with a feeler gauge, make shims from a beer or coke can if need then torque them down, do the same with the upper mount to frame.

With the trans loose bolt up the inner primary then get the mirror & mag light out and check the tranny bolts for any gap to mounts that may need shimming. You'd be surprised how many need it and how much.

Cuts down on a lot of stupid later and kills a lot of vibration.

I do this religiously with the older pans and shovels.

Well guess what I got to do this weekend Lol
After lot of messing around the motor and trans is lined up. The inner primary mates up to both fine now. I didn't need to shim anything. The process for checking and trail fitting was time consuming. A process that needed doing in this case. Now that job is behind me, I have all the seals to change out, and with any luck I can get rid of the oil leaks.

Thanks for all the advice and tips guys.
