Default How to remove wiring under fender

1996 fatboy

My right rear signal has stopped working

the bulb is good

there is ground inside at the signal housing.

With the right turn signal switched to "on" i confirmed there is intermittent flashing power on my probe at the back end of harness connection under the seat.

so the problem lies from the harness back. I need to follow the purple wire. But it's tight as a frogs ***!

How do I get the wiring under the rear fender out so I can follow the line. Back to the light bulb

any help in my next move is appreciated

The model of the bike might help us.

It's a tight fit on most any HD. Myself I have taken the shocks loose on one end and jacked the bike up while wheel stayed on floor. there are little tabs that fold over the harness to keep it in place.

I have been known to pull the rear fender to do major wiring on one.

Gotta head to shop but others may have better idea's

I just recently went through this on the softail custom. The easiest way is to jack it up and drop the tire. Before I bought a jack (get one, they are fairly cheap and sooo nice) I did most of it by feel. You can remove your strut covers and loosen fender and that will get you a little more room.

by drop you mean remove the rear tire or just let it hand off the jack

The easiest way to access this wiring is to put the bike on a lift and remove, completely, the rear wheel. When that is off, you can get a better look as to where the wiring is and what needs to be done to remove it.

Like previous posters have said, the wiring is held in place under the rear fender by tabs that bend up to hold it in place. Once you get the rear wheel off, you will see these tabs.

Good luck!

Letting it hang may give you enough room, sometimes an inch makes a big difference. I pulled my wheel completely when a changed out my signals. My situation may have been a little different though. Someone did quite a bit of monkeying with my wiring so I just redid it all. Without the tire in my way, of course it was easy to access. Just make sure you get the new wires tied up good, most of my wire clips were broken due to foresaid monkeying. I was able to fish 4" zip ties through what was left of wire clips and secure wires properly.

I just had this same problem on my sons Rebel.
Turned out the socket had corrosion on it preventing the circuit from completing.
I cleaned the socket and the light worked again.

It might be easier to just remove the fender than the rear wheel.

If this was a bagger and had a trunk I'd say remove the rear wheel or undo the shocks like I mentioned.

Considering it's a fatboy I'm thinking Uncle G had a good suggestion.

Now this is after cking the bulbs ,sockets and wiring you can get to easily.

"But it's tight as a frogs ***!"

And just how do know this??? Uhh Never mind
