It may be because I am in Florida, but all of my Harley chrome is great.
That's disappointing, I've had mine for 12 years and the chrome looks like new or it would if I polished it.

FWIW...I bought caps from J&P Cycle years back,they aren't pop up but they have the paint protecting insert that screws in the tank then the cap screws into the insert. Large o-rings,no leaks,just can't tighten too much or they are tight to get off ...$80 pair...

I found out I overtightened them the hard way when I went to out gas in it the first time. I had to take a pliars with something wrapped around the pop up to get t to break free.

This is how the J&P pop up ones look installed.
