84 Softail oily around crankcase breather filter?

Just wondering also...
The fitting on my S&S super E carb where the crankcase breather hose would generally connect is just left open now. Is that fine or should I block it off? It's an 84 so does not have head breather bolts but an attachment on the carburetor manifold.
and...
The hose from the crankcase breather that the little filter is attached to the end of takes a bit of a horseshoe route kind of up and back down again out of the crankcase. Does it need to do that or can I just run i straight out and along the underside of the frame?
Matt.

Block it off. That opening is allowing unfiltered air to enter your engine.
