Anyone have suggestions on which aftermarket CPS to buy to replace it? Mine is toast, & really hate to shell out $200 for a stock replacement when I know the aftermarket replacements are cheaper & more reliable.


I've looked on Ebay, J&P, Dennis Kirk, Amazon, & Drag Specialties, but haven't found any that cross reference with the OEM part #32448-95B.

You have the same OEM cam position sensor as my 98 Fatboy and the Standard MC-SPA3 is the one for my bike. I know cause I have one. Standard Motor company has they're own web site. Look it up and call them to confirm the part number I just gave you... I know the Amazon site says it doesn't fit but it does. The only difference in the 3 sensors that they offer is in the connector pins for the wiring harness. Harley used different style connectors throughout the Evo years... Heard they're catalog assistance phone number 718-729-4357.

 

I just got off the phone with standard Motor Products and although the connector is the same as my 98 they do not say that it can be used on our FL's. The sensor that I quoted is for the 98 - 2003 1200 Sportsters. I have one at home I'm going to give it a shot I'll let you know if it works might take me a week but I'll get back to you okay...

Have you thought about getting a combination unit like the Dynatek 2000i?

 

Ok, so this morning I went to the shop early to see if I could get the "standard Motor products MC-SPA3" installed and running in my 98 Fatboy. I had to remove my Dynatek 2ki ignition and just zip tie it out of the way. I also had to reinstall my Screaming Eagle ignition module which is an upgrade to the OEM ignition module that is mounted under the seat.

The MC-SPA3 is a direct replant for the OEM ignition module 32448-95A. I physically matched the OEM to the MC-SPA3 and the location of everything is identical.... It worked perfect.

The only draw back is that you will need a timing light to properly set the base ignition timing. Here is a YouTube link showing the cold start up... Keep in mind I didn't not set timing with a light but only scribed the cam chest to approximate the location for the new Cam position sensor..

 

One more thing I would like to add is that the new cam position sensor MC- SPA3 does not have the vehicle attitude switch built into the sensor which is a kill switch that kills the ignition when the bike falls over.

 

It would seem like your bike has a carb.
Reason: in 1998 the Road King had a fuel injection version on the 1998 Road king Classic.
Wondering if there is a difference in the cup for fuel injected.
While the number for original factory part might be the same for the carb and fuel injected versions, it makes me wonder if there would be a difference with fuel injected if the alternative is used.
The timing thing makes sense since original factory part requires no timing when mounted in the factory position.
Also makes sense why a poster a few years ago could not get it to run with aftermarket part on a fuel injected road king...probably mounted it in the same time position as original factory part and was off timed.
I guess the three wire connections would be the same.
If the wires connections are different then i guess some posi-loc or posi-tite could be used to connect wires easily.
