When I bought mine, I found it was loud at speed and lacked low end torque. The bike appeared to be 100% stock. Closer inspection revealed the previous owner had removed the baffles completely.
I gave the folks at Big City Thunder a call. They sent me a set of lollipop style baffles that Installed at the end of the header pipes where they meet the mufflers.
My bike sounds good and the low end torque was much much better.
Later on, I did a minor refresh on the engine and changed the cam etc. I kept my same exhaust setup since I was happy with it.

do you have the fishtails that come out the back or the side? I believe that the bike you are talking about had the small fishtails on the side. If so you can take a big piece of pipe and drive out the freeze plug that is spot welded in about half way down . It sounds way better than stock and it only takes a few seconds.

For a minute there I thought you were talking about the 60's - 70's golden age of choppers old school. But 1997 old school? "Period correct?" If you want people to know that the bike is classic '90's then load up on this stuff. Very big back then. I stripped it all off my 93 FLSTC but I think I gave it away all ready.
