Default Upper fork covers part # confusion!

Hi guys,

I'm trying to order chrome upper fork covers for my '89 FLHS and depending on what site I go to, I get conflicting information as to what OEM part replacement I need. Some sites say 45964-86 or 45963-97 will or will not fit.

For example, JP says 45964-86 replacement will fit, but Fortnine says it won't....

Both parts look very similar to me, but I want to make sure I order the correct one!

Thanks

part number 45964-86 checks as a fork cover (cow bell) into the 2000 models ... 45964-97 does not come back as a good number for any year ... hope this helps

Yes I have used them three times and always ship really fast and correct each time.
No complaints except they don't always have in stock what I am looking for.

Cool

Start with a parts website for factory base data such as this, from which we can see that the correct part is "#45964-86 - COVER, slider". Note that is for only one cowbell, as we need two for a set. With that info you can now search aftermarket websites!

Some dealer websites allow us to enter a part number, from which it turns out that #45963-97 is a pair of sliders, which indeed seem to be chrome. Having owned my 1990 FLHS from new I don't recall seeing chrome cowbells around that time, so it is possible they were only introduced in 1997. They could in other words be chrome-plated 45964-86s. The MoCo gives different part numbers for different paint colours, also we have the difference of a pair of covers, against the earlier number being for one only.

Hope that helps - a bit!
