Default Final Evo Mod.... Transmission.....

I was going to send my transmission out for a new 6 speed upgrade, It's the oem 5 speed in my 98 Softail. So I figured today at lunch time I'd rip into this thing and see just what it's like before I sent it out and much to my amazement it didn't even take me a half hour and I got this thing all disassembled (it was previously remove when I installed the Ultima 6 which by the way is up for grabs). This upgrade is pretty cool, it's my first transmission job... I spoke with Mark@Bakerbakerdrivetrain and ordered the 401s complete builders kit with the N1 shift drum. I'm very excited and hopefully when I complete this and the primary and carb it will conclude all upgrades for this bike... Any extra pointers would be really helpful.? One more thing, take a look at my gear set some of the gears are pointy and some are not... Normal? or is that just wear. Maybe you guys can let me know thanks...

I also saw this video about a dd6 replacement. Doesn't take much time at all but what caught my interest was the way they removed 5th gear without a puller. Check it out very easy to do and a lot safer in respect to not damaging the case retainer lip for the main bearing. Enjoy....

Can't help bud,but good job doing it yourself,I almost sent my four banger to John, you may remember,I'm glad I tore into it myself and it was easy for me. Enjoy the learning experience. As far as the points on some gears,I would guess not wear, but I don't know...

Are you going to put a jockey shift on it?

Normal? Yes! The profile of the teeth on each gear is different, according to the number of teeth, hence diameter. You can see that the largest gear wheel has flat tops, while the small ones have pointy teeth. It's too long ago since I studied the geometry of such things, so excuse me from trying! A degree in mechanical engineering should do it.....

Besides a tranny I'm doing a few more upgrades as well. Got the brake rotors on tonight actually really like the way they look we'll see how well they work. I also checked the calipers make sure they were retracting properly still don't need to rebuild, thank God. I really didn't want to get into that tonight.

I also have a little bit of a primitive way of swaging out the intake to match the 1.800" on the cylinder head ports. the G carb intake ports come in at 1.780". So what I did was I heated up the whole intake in the oven and made my own little primitive swage and expanded the end so it'll match the ports on the head. I know looks primitive or whatever but you know what, it works and they're still round that's the important thing. Tomorrow I should get the carb mounted.
