Default 5-speed transmission final drive gear install

This is my first time rebuilding a Harley 5-speed transmission. After a fair amount of research I think I have a pretty good idea on how to go about it. At this point I have the entire transmission stripped down to the case which is now out for powder coating.

My question relates to the final gear install. I want to make sure I install it properly and I can't find much info on how to go about doing it. I did find that Jims makes a $200 tool that is used to install the final drive gear. I also found another site that said just take a 2x4 piece of wood and pound it in.

I would be interested in hearing how other people install a final drive gear. Do I need the tool or can I accomplish the task without spending add'l money?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm in the same boat, getting ready to install a baker DD6 in my 88 FLHS. I saw a pic of a home made tool using a piece of all thread, an old bearing and a home made plate to press it in. I'm gonna make something like that using the all thread and parts from my bearing/race install kit. Hammering it in just doesn't sound good to me.

I hear you can make your own with a piece of schedule 40 PVC pipe. Not sure if it's inch and a half for 2". I'll be doing mine soon and I can let you know. A couple endplates a long bolt fine thread and a bearing and grease and you can just literally pull it from the inside to the out.
