Has anyone on here drilled their trans to accept a speed sensor for Speedo conversion. I'm not asking about taking it apart and having it machined. I mean got a drill and made a hole.

 

Not sure I'm getting the question here.

Are you thinking of doing this with the trans in place? Seems impossible, for any number of reasons (how to locate the hole? How to keep the shavings out of the gears? How to drill the hole straight? etc, etc, etc).

I've never thought about doing this, never done it, never heard about it being done, so maybe I'm missing something, but this seems like a pretty bad way to save a few hours to me.

 

Again there are ways to solve all those problems, short drill bit, angle drill, vacuum while drilling. And it's more than a few hours to remove the trans and take it apart to bring it somewhere and have it machined.

What is it going to sense to get the signal it needs?

 

If you think you can do it, I'm not here to tell you you can't.

You'll never keep all of the shavings out of the case, but that probably doesn't matter all that much anyway. The relatively soft metal from the case will just get chewed up by the gears anyway. Won't do the trans any good, but probably won't hurt all that much.

I just don't see how you are going to free-hand a precision, straight hole, without any wobble at all, in precisely the correct location, while controlling the bit when it punches through. Plus, those holes are fairly large...like 3/8" or something, so it's going to take successive passes.

But if you think you've worked out a plan, go for it.

 

You would be way ahead of the game, to find a used trans case on ebay and change it out.

 

Or if you use an aftermarket speedo...you can get a rear wheel sensor that mounts to the axle and reads the pulley bolts...takes 5 minutes to install.
