if you read the book it would have told you that the cable need to be pushed back so the starting point has the correct clocking but you can do it your way

BTW the screw is the end of the adjust made after the rest is set correctly

It takes at least a quart especially when you've pulled off the outer primary.
My book calls for 36 - 42 oz in the primary but it only seems to take that much if I pull off the outer primary.

Don't go by quantity, fill to the proper LEVEL (see the service manual).

For example, the service manual for my bike calls for 1 quart, but I find I need to use about 40 oz. to bring the level to the proper level (touching the spring disc+1/8").

I loosened the cable before I cracked the nut on the clutch. Adjusted the clutch,tightend the lock bolt ....... then adjusted the cable. IDK if I'm not following you.

by hand push the inner cable towards the trans its over wound

Also, after you turn the adjustment screw in until it makes contact, try backing it out less than a half turn. Trial and error, but you'll eventually find the sweet spot where your clutch is happy.

how many miles on the bike? my 85 took 10,000 miles to break in the trans to where it shifted how i liked it.
